Lake Huron Coastal Centre Mobilizes Communities for Conservation

The Lake Huron Coastal Centre (LHCC) is a charitable organization established in 1998 with the goal of protecting and restoring Lake Huron's coastal environment through education, restoration, and research projects along the Lake Huron shoreline in Ontario, Canada.

LHCC Launches Summer Conservation Programs

LHCC is tackling plastic pollution head-on this summer with ambitious conservation programming spanning from Sarnia, Ontario to Georgian Bay. Through beach clean-ups, youth education and community science monitoring programs, LHCC is building a comprehensive approach to protecting one of the most precious Great Lakes.

Community Action Delivers Results

LHCC is planning ten beach clean-ups along the Lake Huron coast this season, aiming to reduce plastic pollution while raising awareness in coastal communities. The season launched successfully with an Earth Day clean-up in Goderich, where 147 volunteers braved high winds and cold temperatures to remove 270 pounds of litter from the shoreline.

This impressive turnout perfectly aligned with Goderich's recent Lake Huron Forever pledge—a commitment to protect the lake's water quality through community-driven conservation initiatives. The volunteer response demonstrated how local engagement can translate into tangible environmental results.

Investing in Tomorrow's Conservationists

The Coastal Conservation Youth Corps (CCYC) offers youth aged 14-18 hands-on experience in coastal ecosystem management, shoreline dynamics and restoration work. Participants gain practical field experience while making a direct impact on their local coastal environment.

LHCC is hosting this program at no cost in Goderich, Kincardine and Saugeen Shores this year. The Kincardine session is already underway, and registration is filling up quickly due to high demand! The program represents a unique opportunity for young people to develop environmental skills while contributing meaningfully to conservation efforts in their community.

Eyes on the Coast

LHCC's Coast Watchers community science program regularly monitors atmospheric conditions, wildlife presence, human activities, storm damage, plastic pollution and algae washups from May to October each year. This incredible volunteer network covers the coastline from Sarnia to the Bruce Peninsula, providing valuable environmental data across hundreds of kilometers. In recent years Huron Pines has launched the Coast Watchers program on the Michigan side on Lake Huron to better understand both sides of the lake. Look for communications in the spring of 2026 for your opportunity to join the program!
